Dutch Dwarf Goat
- Description
- A small, compact breed of domestic goat developed in the Netherlands from imported West African dwarf goats. Adults weigh roughly 20-35 kg and stand about 50 cm at the shoulder, with short legs, a sturdy build and coats in many colours including black, brown and spotted. Both males and females carry small, curved horns, and the breed is known for its friendly, easy-going temperament.
- Habitat
- This is a domesticated breed rather than a wild animal. Its ancestors were dwarf goats from the coastal regions of West and Central Africa, brought to Europe in the 19th century and shown as exotic curiosities in zoos before being bred into the modern Dutch Dwarf in the Netherlands.
- Diet
- A herbivore that browses and grazes on grass, leaves, hay and the twigs of shrubs and trees.
- Reproduction
- Gestation lasts about 150 days. A female usually gives birth to 1-3 kids, with twins being especially common.
- Lifespan
- Typically around 10-15 years.
